Off-duty corrections officer fires shot at suspect in Newark

NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- An off-duty Essex County Corrections Officer fired a shot at a suspect on a Newark street Friday morning, authorities said.

The suspect appears to have been attempting to break into a car parked on Crown Street just before 5:30 a.m.

The off-duty officer confronted the suspect on the street, and fired a shot.

The suspect was not struck, and the officer then took the suspect into custody. Charges against the suspect are pending.

Newark police identified the shooter as an Essex County Corrections Officer and referred further comment to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
