It happened just before 6 p.m. Saturday on Broadway and 29th Street in Astoria. Police say the driver of the Volkswagen Atlas that hit him in the intersection took off.

"You can imagine how that guy hit that motorcycle," said Mario A Diaz.
The busy stretch of restaurants and bars became a crime scene. Shop owners were jolted by the sound.
Ki Kim, a worker in the grocery store nearby says the 26-year-old victim is a known delivery guy in the area and was a nice man.
"My working man - him friend - him delivery too," Kim said.
The 26-year-old suffered severe head and body trauma and was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in 'extreme' critical condition, according to police.
"To see his bike wrecked the way it was - it's horrible for me, because I didn't want to believe it," said the victim's friend, Jay Nolan.

"Especially the hard impact - like him flying off the moped -- like him falling - it's a hard thing to not cry for," added another friend, Ares Ecos.
Police say the vehicle involved in the hit and run has been recovered, but the driver remains on the run - abandoning the car.
The investigation is ongoing.
