SUNSET PARK, Brooklyn (WABC) -- A 19-year-old man was rushed to the hospital after being shot near a busy intersection in Brooklyn on Thursday.

The shooting happened just before 5:30 p.m. along Fourth Avenue and 59th Street in Sunset Park, a busy street near a subway stop and playground filled with kids.

Multiple shell casings littered the street that became flooded with cops on the first day of school for many students.

Police say a 19-year-old victim was shot once in the left leg.

Witnesses say the victim and the shooter were in a verbal dispute before shots rang out.

Edwin Hernandez and his father Robert run a pizza stand on the corner. They say the gunshots sent children running, and that the victim and suspect have caused trouble here before.

"I just ran. I just ran to my shop," Edwin Hernandez said.

"They tried to steal my bicycles a couple times," Robert Hernandez said.

It's unclear what sparked the argument.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he's expected to survive.
