Authorities say around 8 p.m. 23-year-old Chandiana Jean was driving a Chevy Impala when it rear-ended a Toyota Sienna at the intersection of Essex Street and New Lots Avenue. The impact sent the Impala into the intersection and the car struck a Ford Escape.
Officials say the Impala was then hit by an eastbound MTA bus on the B15 route.
At least 14 people were hurt. Authorities say a 44-year-old woman, who was in the back of the Impala, was rushed to the Brookdale University Hospital in critical condition.
The other people who were injured, nine men and four women, were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Jean was taken to Jamaica Hospital after the crash and was later charged with possession of a forged instrument and aggravated unlicensed operator.
The MTA bus was towed away from the scene Monday morning, but the debris remained in the middle of this intersection.
People who live in the area say this intersection would be a lot safer if the stop signs were replaced with traffic lights.
