It happened just before 7 p.m. Friday on 62nd Ave near 102nd Street in Rego Park. Sources close to the investigation say it started during a baby's first birthday party, when the suspect, the baby's grandfather, started stabbing his wife. She fled and ran down the hallway, screaming for help.
Neighbors called 911, and the first four officers to arrive ran up the stairs, when they saw the 46-year-old man in second-floor stairwell and demanded he drop the knife.
"As soon as they walked out the staircase, a male is charging at them with a knife. They give commands to drop, he doesn't stop, the sergeant tried to use his taser, but the two other officers, they fired their weapons," said NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey.
Officers immediately began CPR, and EMS rushed the man to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead.
The woman suffered at least two stab wounds. She is currently recovering at an area hospital.
No officers were injured.
