Police responded to Beach 59th Street and Rockaway Beach at just before 6 p.m. Monday. The woman who may have been surfing at the beach was bitten by a shark close to shore.
The 50-year-old was taken to Jamaica Hospital where she is listed in critical condition. FDNY says the injury appears to be on her leg.
NYPD drones went up and searched the waters for sharks for an hour or so before sunset, trying to determine if there were more around.
NYC Parks says they are working with NYPD and FDNY to do enhanced surveillance of the beach on Tuesday before opening. Rockaway Beach will have a delayed opening until at least 11 a.m.
