NEW YORK (WABC) -- It was a special retirement today for one of New York's finest, and an opportunity to highlight a police unit most New Yorkers know little about - the NYPD Harbor Unit.
Inspector David Driscoll has led a team of 200 men and women for more than a decade, overseeing an elite group that patrols 150 miles of New York City waterways with some of the best equipment in the country.

If you look out on the water, you can see the Harbor Unit's high speed boats - they are out there every day, protecting crowded ferries and conducting search and rescues. The boats are bulletproof and can detect radioactivity, stop on a dime, rotate 360 degrees and even roll over.
The technology is new since 9/11 and the unit is now 30 boats strong.
