It happened just before 12 a.m. Saturday at Lyman Place and East 169th Street.
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said a group of four officers confronted an armed suspect after a brief foot chase.
During a violent struggle, the suspect's weapon went off once and a lieutenant was struck in the ankle.
Police released body camera footage of the struggle Saturday afternoon.

The officer was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where he was treated and released. He is expected to make a full recovery.
The suspect was taken into custody after the struggle. He is identified by police sources as 26-year-old Jerome Roman of the Bronx.
He was arrested and hit with a slew of charges including attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest.
Roman was later arraigned on Sunday and is scheduled back in court on August 5.

The other officers were treated for minor cuts and bruises.
A 9mm Smith and Wesson handgun was recovered at the scene. Police say it jammed after it went off.
Shea said Roman is known to police, with several prior weapons-related arrests.
