NYPD officers got into the shootout while responding to a robbery in Chelsea Friday morning, just before 3 a.m. near the intersection of West 21st Street and Sixth Avenue.
Plainclothes officers who were wearing NYPD windbreakers were working inside Club Doux when a bouncer told them a robbery was taking place in front of the club.
Police say 24-year-old Usman Haruna was one of several people who stole items from someone standing outside of the establishment.
When the officers went outside and tried to intervene, police said the suspects fired at them.
The officers returned fire. No one was struck.
Haruna was allegedly a of the crew that stole the victim's "phone, chain, United States Currency, bracelet, Rolex watch, and wallet containing credit cards," according to police.
The victim sustained a laceration to his lip and bruising to his arm and chest due during the mugging.
Haruna claimed that his un-apprehended accomplices committed the crime and fled in their car.
He said he thought they were armed with a BB gun.
Police said Haruna fled on foot to an apartment building, where he was later caught.
He faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
Haruna was also charged with dragging a police officer in the Bronx last December.
Police found shell casings outside the nightclub.
It happened at the same location where a man was shot and a police cruiser struck by gunfire on July 18.
