1 firefighter killed, several others injured in Philadelphia building collapse during fire response

PHILADELPHIA (WABC) -- One firefighter was killed and several other people were injured when a building collapsed in Philadelphia early Saturday.

The Philadelphia Fire Department said on Twitter the collapse happened at 3:24 a.m. during a fire response on West Indiana Street in the Fairhill neighborhood.

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Craig Murphy said during a news briefing that six people, five firefighters and a city inspector, were initially trapped.

Murphy said the fire had been put out and firefighters were helping displaced residents when the building suddenly collapsed.

Four firefighters and the inspector were rescued and taken to the hospital and the inspector has since been released.

The firefighter who was killed was a 27-year veteran of the department.
