WOODSIDE, Queens (WABC) -- A man is in custody after allegedly shooting his superintendent and barricading himself inside his apartment in Queens, police said.

Authorities initially responded to a report of a person shot outside an apartment building on 31-31 54th St., in Woodside just after 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

The victim was shot once in the torso and the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

When officers arrived, the suspect in that shooting fled into the apartment building.

As police responded, the suspect fired shots, apparently out of the window into the air.

Officers then fired and the gunman retreated into the building. He was not believed to have been struck.

Hostage negotiators worked to make contact with the suspect for hours. An NYPD drone and the department's high-tech DigiDog also descended upon the apartment building.

Some tenants were evacuated.

About two hours later, exclusive video showed the suspect rolled out on a stretcher. Police say he shot himself in the chest after officers extended cameras inside his barricaded apartment to get a closer look.

"The location was secure - we had the person inside - we were comfortable we had him inside - but we had to worry about other people bullets going through walls - bullets coming out of windows - and our ESU did an excellent job with the equipment," said NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey.
