1 killed, 4 injured in shooting during basketball game in Bronx park

BAYCHESTER, The Bronx (WABC) -- One person was killed and four others were injured in a shooting during a basketball tournament in the Bronx.

The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Haffen Park off Gunther Ave in Baychester.

The number of shooters and rounds fired are still unknown. On Saturday night, police shut down the entire nine-acre park as they worked to identify dozens of pieces of evidence, including bullet shell casings.

Bullets struck five people, including a 30-year-old man who was pronounced dead at Jacobi Hospital.

A 32-year-old man was shot in the back and rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

A 17-year-old girl was shot in the face and is in stable condition.

Two other victims, 29 and 42, also received treatment for their injuries.

Neighbors were rattled by the crime.

"I've lived here for 50 years -- I've never seen ... the area is getting gentrified, you know, there's a lot of people coming back and forth. I'm kind of shocked at what's going on because it's been peaceful lately, for the last, I'd say 10-12 years, it's been very good," said Nicholas Thompson.

Just last month, the NYPD and Mayor Adams asserted that the number of shootings and homicides during summer were on the decline. However, following this shooting and one in Crown Heights last week, that is no longer accurate.

Four people are being questioned, but no arrests have been made yet.

The NYPD investigation is ongoing.
