Officers responded to reports of multiple shots fired around 12:25 a.m. near 194 Locust Street, where they found numerous victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
2 killed, 9 wounded in shooting at large Trenton gathering
Surviving victims were transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting were not immediately released, and investigators have not identified any suspects.
The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Task Force is leading the investigation.
In a statement Sunday, Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora thanked the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office, Mercer County Sheriff's Office, New Jersey State Police and neighboring law enforcement agencies for assisting Trenton police during what he described as a rapidly developing situation.
The mayor said the shooting occurred during a large, unauthorized gathering that drew an estimated 200 or more people to a residential street. He said the city is reviewing additional strategies to prevent similar gatherings from growing into dangerous situations, including earlier intervention, enhanced law enforcement coordination and enforcement of existing ordinances.
"You should not have to accept this as normal," the mayor said in a statement addressing residents of the Wilbur section and East Trenton. "Your block should not become an event venue for hundreds of people without notice or authorization. You should not have to wake up to gunfire, crime-scene tape and homicide investigators outside your home."
Gusciora also said the city will deploy community outreach teams in the neighborhood to work with residents, gather information and help prevent retaliatory violence.
Authorities are urging anyone who attended the gathering and may have photos, videos or information about the shooting to come forward.
