CLARKSTOWN, New York (WABC) -- One person was killed in a two-car crash on Interstate 87 northbound in Clarkstown Monday.

State police were called to the crash around 12:39 a.m. where they discovered a 2009 Nissan Sentra disabled on the right shoulder of the interstate.

A preliminary investigation found that a 2014 Ford was traveling northbound in the same lane when it rear-ended the Nissan, causing both vehicles to spin out across all lanes of travel and strike the median on the left shoulder.

The driver of the Nissan, Steven Redner, 47, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Ford driver, identified as a 25-year-old male of Elmsford, NY, received treatment from EMS at the scene before being transported to Westchester Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Northbound lanes were closed near exit 12 in Clarkstown for several hours but have since reopened.

The investigation is ongoing.
