The victims were struck by gunfire on Davidson Avenue just before 12:15 a.m. after a dispute.
Witnesses told Eyewitness News that people were hanging out in front of a building on Davidson Avenue, when a fist fight broke out.
One person involved went inside, and minutes later, came out with a group of four or five others, looking to settle the score.
All three were rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital.
36-year-old Justin Lawless, known in the neighborhood as Blaze, and 44-year-old Claretha Daniels were both shot in the chest and pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital. Both lived in the building.
A 40-year-old man shot in the right arm was rushed to St. Barnabas where he was listed in stable condition.
On Friday, detectives returned to the scene while a growing memorial for the victims took shape across the street.
Police say two men wearing all black fled on a red moped, but according to a witness, the man who actually pulled the trigger took off on foot.
Detectives have identified a person of interest. He is believed to be a migrant and is also a suspect in an open pattern of robberies. He is not in custody, and a second person is also being sought for questioning.
So far, there are no arrests and the motive is under investigation.
