It happened on Townline Road and Terry Road at 6:43 a.m.
The car then crashed into a tree. A construction helmet, work boots, and other items were left scattered across the ground following the fatal crash.
"Based on the video we have, he was driving at a high rate of speed, drove through a red light, and he was in the westbound lane traveling eastbound," said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina.
One man, 38-year-old Joel Sicon-Porix of Mastic, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The two other victims, Kevin Chavez-Sarmiento and Jose Gonzalez Colindres, are being treated for serious injuries.
"They are both in pretty bad shape," Catalina said.
Eyewitness News spoke with a woman who said her husband was the victim of this terrible crash.
"My husband died. I just don't see nothing," said Glendice Sacorias, the wife of the victim.
Sacorias was crying while visiting the place where Sicon-Porix was struck and killed, and was stunned to find out the driver was traveling in the wrong direction.
"My husband was working here," she said.
At the time of the crash about 10 to 15 workers were arriving at the road-paving job. They work for the Rosemar paving company that is subcontracted by Suffolk County.
The workers were just arriving and the work had not begun at the time of the crash according to Kevin Daponte, of Rosemar Construction.
"He was just not coherent and hit three different things on the way in before hitting our guys. Work didn't even start yet, they just parked their vehicles and were walking to work," he said.
Daponte said they were on the sidewalk when it happened.
The driver, 26-year-old Thomas Lobianco, was leaving an overnight shift at a nearby convenience store and spent 20 minutes in the car before getting on the roadway.
He was seen being placed into handcuffs and taken into police custody.
Lobianco was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday.
The crash is under investigation.
