The driver was arrested but at least one other suspect is still on the run.
The car was taken from MoeModz, an auto customization shop in Elmwood Park, around 3:30 a.m.
Police say they climbed a wall and broke a window with a solid object to get inside the business. In a matter of minutes they had the car and drove off, setting off an alarm that notified police.
The owner of the custom shop believes the suspects were looking for the chance to steal the Lamborghini.
"My belief honestly is I've been targeted for three days, or maybe more, or maybe I've been followed, I don't know," the business owner said. "But I do personally believe that I've been followed and I've been targeted specifically for this car."
The thieves drove the car to Newark where it was tracked down by an auto theft task force. Police chased the vehicle but lost it when the suspects got away.
It popped up again in Bergen County in Upper Saddle River where another chase began.
Authorities used a tire deflation device as the vehicle made its way through Paramus.
The driver kept going, even with the damaged tires, into Hillside. That's where the car was surrounded and boxed in by police vehicles.
The suspects tried to run away but the driver was taken into custody on a charge of receiving stolen property.
He was identified by police as 21-year-old Munir Muhammad of Newark.
In addition to the passenger that got away, police are also looking for another vehicle that may have also been involved.
