72-year-old woman killed after car crashes into people on bench in the Bronx

CO-OP CITY, Bronx (WABC) -- A woman was killed after a driver lost control and crashed into people sitting on a bench in the Bronx on Tuesday afternoon.

It happened at Bartow Avenue and Co-Op City Boulevard around 1:30 p.m.

It appears the 55-year-old driver had a medical episode and lost control of his vehicle, a red 2018 Mazda CX, when it crashed into two people on a bench.

A 72-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 36-year-old man suffered minor injuries and was conscious and alert. He was taken to Jacobi Hospital in stable condition.



It appears the driver remained on the scene. Police say he is in stable condition.

So far no arrests have been made.

The NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad (CIS) is now investigating the crash.
