When Courtney Becker couldn't get her money back from the bank, she contacted a totally different kind of housing authority -- 7 On Your Side.
"I just feel very frustrated and dejected," said Courtney Becker, a TV sports marketer.
Becker is used to jumping through hoops, but she's been fouled for months, attempting to rebound from a major deficit in her bank account.
That $3,660 check had been M.I.A. since last September. The amount never made it to her landlord.
"My guess is that it was stolen out of the mail."
Becker brings her check to a mailbox on the corner of 96th Street and Columbus every month.
The addressee section has been changed from the property manager to a man with the last name Brown.
"Never heard of this person or met them," Becker said; "it's pretty obvious to me it's been altered."
The mail had clearly been tampered with. Becker reported it right away to her bank, PNC.
The diehard Yankees fan thought she had all her bases covered.
"It's a very large check, first of all, and I had written to a different recipient for 6 months, and you can see by looking at it been tampered with."
But after four months, she still couldn't get her rent money back.
"After 120 days I was told this has been denied and dismissed," she said.
Becker headed to the police station to file a report.
The 28-year-old says next she sent the report and an sworn affidavit to her bank certified, but...
"It just says delivery failed."
Beyond frustrated, the Notre Dame grad got her fighting Irish up and took the advice of a co-worker, reaching out to Nina Pineda.
7 On Your Side reached out to PNC Bank, and the next day, Becker's account was credited.
"We have very great news: I got my money back from PNC," she celebrated.
The case had misfiled -- she said it was PNC's error. Luckily, Becker got her full reimbursement.
"I was so relieved could not stop smiling all day... thank you so much," she said.
That's a grand slam for 7 On Your Side.
