Abandoned dog left outside animal shelter in New Rochelle in the middle of the night

NEW ROCHELLE, New York (WABC) -- After being left out in the cold for five hours, an abandoned dog is now safe and warm at an animal shelter in New Rochelle.

She's shy and in good health, but a closer look at the puppy's nose reveals a bruise.

"Some scrapes on her nose, probably from trying to get out of the cage from being so afraid," said Tiffany Rivera of the Humane Society of Westchester.

The dog can be heard crying in a heartbreaking video. The young Pitbull was left outside of the Humane Society of Westchester in New Rochelle in the middle of the night, at 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

"We actually got a call from the local police department, when the neighboring business arrived earlier than we did and saw the dog out. So when we arrived, there was a dog abandoned in a kennel outside," Rivera said.

The shelter's cameras recorded two men as they emerged from a white car and placed the kennel right outside of the entrance. It's not known if they are the dog's owners or if they found the dog, but they simply walked away.

While picking this location may seem well intentioned, the timing was not ideal. Not only was the dog exposed to the cold for several hours, it prevented workers from learning valuable information about the animal's health and temperament.

"Leaving them outside of a shelter is never right. You know, just call, follow the proper channels," Rivera said. "It's important for us to know information about the dog so we can properly care for them and place them into new homes."

New York State requires a week-long hold in case the owner does come forward. After that, she'll be put up for adoption.

"She's been a bit traumatized, so we'll just give her some time to settle in and hopefully, you know, we'll be able to place her into a home once we know her a little bit better," Rivera said.

Right now, she's a dog in need of a second rescue.
