Avicii concert scheduled for Barclays Saturday; security beefed up

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Fresh off hosting the NBA draft, Barclays Center in Brooklyn will host Avicii's next concert Saturday night.

A statement from the arena said Barclays has a beefed up security plan for electronic dance music concerts adding, "Guests must be 18 years old or over and provide valid ID or they will be denied entry; extensive security screenings are conducted at all entrances including full body pat downs and drug screening dogs."

Popular DJ Avicii's show in Boston at the TD Garden earlier this week turned out to be a mess, as more than 30 people wound up in the hospital, and dozens more were treated at the scene. Police blamed alcohol and the popular club drug "Molly."

"Everyone is on drugs and really drunk, so it's pretty dangerous," said James Darney, who has been to electronic dance music (EDM) concerts. He said hearing that people have taken "Molly" at those concerts is not surprising.

In New York during Labor Day weekend, there were two Molly-related deaths at the Electric Zoo Festival. The city canceled the concert's second day.

TD Garden spokeswoman Tricia McCorkle said that at Wednesday night's Avicii concert "there were a number of transports due to medical issues." Twenty-two people were taken to the hospital, and a dozen more were under evaluation, EMS Deputy Superintendent Mike Bosse told the Boston Herald that night.

Two people died over the weekend at a Las Vegas music festival attended by Avicii, one of the biggest names in electronic dance music. Authorities said Monday it will take several weeks to determine what caused the deaths of the Electric Daisy Carnival fans.

Police said nearly 800 people were treated for medical conditions and 25 were hospitalized during the three-night electronic music festival, which organizers said drew about 400,000 people at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Festival organizers told police that 134,000 fans attended Friday, Saturday and Sunday night shows featuring pulsing lights, Ferris wheels, seven stages of music and DJs including Avicii, Diplo, Afrojack and Tiesto.
