The movie is about an ex-revolutionary-turned-stoner (played by DiCaprio), living off the grid and raising his daughter in hiding. When his daughter goes missing, though, he is forced to face his past after spending years running from it.
"Paul set up a guy that just gets stoned and he's gotta go find his daughter, and what the hell do you do?" DiCaprio said. "With the amount of miscommunication that we have, the amount of extremism that we have that is this topical to today, and really holds a mirror up to where we are as a society."
Joining DiCaprio and Del Toro is an all-star ensemble, including Sean Penn, Teyana Taylor, Regina Hall, and Chase Infiniti.
"The humor in this movie, these flawed characters, you're with them," DiCaprio said. "You feel like they exist."
DiCaprio called "One Battle After Another" Anderson's "largest movie to date," and it is filled to the brim with characters and story to explore.
"I was taken on this ride, and it's a cliché, I didn't know exactly where it was going," Del Toro said. "I think at the end, how emotional I was... as much as I was having fun, there was also this other thing that was very warm."
The cast looks back fondly on the production of "One Battle After Another," sharing parts of their characters they miss now that it is all over.
"Rilla is, like, she's a go getter, if anything," Infiniti said. "The second that she puts her mind into something, she's going at it. And I think I miss that, playing with that a lot."
As for Taylor, DiCaprio had nothing but praise for his co-star.
"We needed somebody that could improvise and bring it a fearlessness, you know, a real fearlessness to who this woman was as a revolutionary that we're all so still affected by," DiCaprio said. "Her ability to improvise was really what made that character, man. Her ability to go there, you know, to those extremes. We knew there was really only one person for the job, and that was her."
Taylor herself admires how her character "always said what was on her mind," adding that she thinks she said the f-word "more than Samuel L. Jackson in this movie."
Ultimately, "One Battle After Another" tells an original story, one crafted with care and passion that is evident on screen.
"It's an original film that I really hope people come out and support because we need more films like this, and I'm just so proud to be a part of it," DiCaprio said.
"One Battle After Another" hits theaters on Sept. 26.
