Boy, 10, rescued after falling off cliff into quarry in White Plains

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (WABC) -- A New York City boy is hospitalized with neck, back and arm injuries after falling about 30 feet into a quarry in Westchester County.

County police say the 10-year-old child from Queens was in Cranberry Lake Preserve with his family when he slipped on loose stones on Tuesday and fell.

Authorities say he landed near a small pond in the 190-acre park and was initially unconscious.

The Journal News reports that it took emergency responders about half hour to rescue him. Police said they had to contend with rugged terrain, rocks and small trees and brush.

The boy is listed in stable condition.

When it was over, Andrew Seicol, fire chief at the North White Plains Fire Department, breathed a huge sigh of relief. "A lot of luck. It's a miracle, it really is," Seicol said.

The rescue played out on a day off from school for the boy, hiking with his family in the Cranberry Lake Preserve. Seicol and his all-volunteer force know the area well and made it to the boy quickly.

"His father's a physician, he was by his side immediately after the fall, I'm sure he helped," Seicol said.

Firefighters and EMTs packaged the boy in a stokes basket, and then lifted him back to the top, for a trip to Westchester Medical Center.

"Everybody got their job done. From the newest probie to the most veteran guy, everybody did what they had to do," Seicol said. "It was a very good outcome."
