Police say the shooting happened at 1007 Southern Blvd. in the Hunts Point section around 5:40 p.m.
Gunfire shattered the glass of a bodega's door. At least one shooter targeted someone on the sidewalk in front of it.
Police say the target was definitely not that 5-year-old girl, but she was grazed in the ear.
She was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition.
Police are reviewing surveillance video from the bodega and neighboring businesses that may help them figure out who fired those shots and injured the child, who appeared to be with her mom.
Witnesses saw people scatter after hearing the gunfire.
"I see somebody, they move like this, three people they move like that, that's what I see," said witness Mohammad Haalb. "I hear five times, the shots. Everybody, they're scared. I don't want to die, you know?"
"I think NYPD, especially in areas with problems all the time, they need to put more cops, you know?" said neighbor Michele Ali.
That neighbor says something like this is less likely to happen on a busy commercial street in the late afternoon, with more police on patrol.
No arrests have been made, and it's not clear the motive of the shooting.
