Refrigerator repairman critically injured after being hit by stray bullet outside Bronx fruit store

MOTT HAVEN, The Bronx (WABC) -- A repairman at a Bronx produce market was hurt after being hit in the head with a stray bullet outside the store, witnesses say.

Police responded to Brook Avenue and East 148th Street in Mott Haven just after 2:30 p.m. The gunfire sent people running in the middle of a Friday afternoon.

"This is ridiculous. I'm a mother with six kids. This is dangerous. I could have got hit. What happened if at that moment I would have walked and got hit? Does that make any sense?" said Jasmine Cruz.

Another witness was too fearful to even show her face.

"We're scared going outside. We're scared to go into the park. You don't know what happens, you know it's crazy. I don't feel safe outside," she said.

The worker was hired by the fruit store to fix a refrigerator and he had briefly stepped outside according to the witness, when an argument he was not a part of escalated to gunfire. The innocent bystander then became a victim.

As the sun went down, crime scene investigators continued marking all the shell casings. The shooter was still on the loose.

The worker, a man in his thirties, police say, is in critical condition at the hospital.

Police say the suspect, a male, was last seen wearing a "Members Only" jacket, grey pants and black sneakers.

He fled on foot, traveling southbound on Brook Avenue.

There are no arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.
