Authorities say the victim was shot once in the right thigh at 610 Jackson Ave. in the Melrose section around 6:20 p.m.
She was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where she's expected to survive.
Police say they are looking for four male suspects who wearing all black and were last seen fleeing southbound on Jackson Avenue.
Two shell casings were recovered at the scene of the shooting.
Police sources say the victim was an innocent bystander, and was not the intended target.
No arrests have been made so far.
The investigation is ongoing.
The shooting comes after the NYPD's 40th precinct unveiled a new stationhouse earlier on Wednesday.
The number of shooting victims in the 40th precinct are up by 45.5% compared to this time last year.
