The victim was found shot in the driver's seat of his vehicle, a black Mercedes Benz SUV, on Lincoln Place just after 10 p.m. Thursday.
The 52-year-old was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in critical condition.
Witnesses told investigators they saw two men in hoodies flee on foot from his vehicle.
"There's an apartment, everyone says inside something is serious going on outside. What looks like a taxi driver bleeding profusely from the mouth," said Lizzie, a neighbor.
"We looked outside the window and there were a bunch of police officers pulling him out and putting him on a stretcher taking him away. We lived here for a few years. Nothing like this has happened, quite intense," said Jamie Wheeler Roberts, a resident.
"Just a couple pops, nothing insane, pop, pop. I really thought it was fireworks," said Matthew Hamilton-Roux, a neighbor.
A gun was recovered at the scene, but so far, police say they don't know who the gun belongs to.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
"We are actively assisting NYPD in its investigation, and our thoughts are with the driver and his family," said TLC Commissioner David Do in a statement.
Anyone with information is asked to call the police.
