The shooting happened at 533 Ocean Ave. in Flatbush shortly after 7:30 p.m.
Police say the two suspected shooters turned a busy intersection into the Wild West and residents woke up Wednesday to find bullet holes in their cars and shell casings underneath.
"You never know - like a bullet, stray bullet could have ricochet and hit somebody. It's just ridiculous," said one Flatbush resident who checked his father's car for bullet holes.
NYPD officials say officers out on patrol heard gunshots and saw two individuals involved in a shootout at the location. Officers exited their vehicle, drew their weapons and fired shots at one of the two individuals that was closest to them, striking a man at least once.
Officers performed CPR on the suspect before he was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he is stable.
They say the injured suspect is a 22-year-old Edynesson Bauduy, a two-time convicted felon, currently out on parole until 2030.
He was arrested in 2021, at the age of 18 for shooting someone, not far from Tuesday night's shooting. He was released on his own recognizance only to be arrested again for a violent robbery in southern Brooklyn.
"This is a person who has repeatedly shrugged his shoulders at consequences and at our criminal justice system," said NYPD Patrol Borough Brooklyn South Assistant Chief Francis Giordano during a briefing Tuesday night.
Ultimately, he pleaded guilty two both crimes, and was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison and five years parole. He was released from prison just two months ago on June 10, 2025 because his prison sentences ran concurrently -- meaning the judge allowed him to serve his sentences at the same time.
"If somebody deserves a second chance that's fine, but if you're just shooting to be shooting out here that's ridiculous so they don't deserve a second chance," said Flatbush resident Kim Scott, whose elderly aunt lives in the building right near the shooting.
It is unclear what kind of charges the suspect faces next. As far his criminal past, law enforcement sources told Eyewitness News that evidence in both prior cases was somewhat weak and circumstantial, so a plea offer was the best possible option under the circumstances.
NYPD officials say a 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.
Police are still looking for the second man involved in the shootout as they continue their investigation.
