Knicks watch party at Bryant Park ends with 7 arrests after disorderly behavior

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A Knicks watch party at Bryant Park turned violent Tuesday night, leading to multiple arrests and confrontations with NYPD officers.

Thousands of fans gathered across New York City to watch Game 3, with official watch parties held at Bryant Park, Wollman Rink in Central Park and Brooklyn Bowl. Fans were required to register online in advance to attend.

Many fans had hoped there would be a watch party outside Madison Square Garden, but heightened security around the arena due to President Donald Trump's attendance at the game meant that was not an option.

Video from Bryant Park showed fans gathered on the lawn watching the game on a large screen. Some said they enjoyed the atmosphere despite not being outside Madison Square Garden.

"I think it's pretty cool actually, everyone's still out here having fun. It's lit, it's lit, we about to go out there after though," one fan said.

Others said the experience did not match the energy they expected.

"It's not the same. It's not the same. We were expecting a lot more people, a lot more energy. This is fine, but I was expecting like a party. I was expecting like a huge sweep on the streets," another fan said.

As the night went on, police said some fans climbed on cars and scaffolding in an attempt to see the screen inside the watch party without registering for the event or following its rules.

Fights broke out and several confrontations occurred with NYPD officers.

Police arrested six people for disorderly conduct and one person for assaulting a police officer.

Officials say similar security measures will remain in place for Game 4. However, a watch party is expected to be held outside Madison Square Garden on Thursday.
