The fire broke out around 2:45 a.m. at a residence on Chauncey Street.
First responders arrived within minutes and worked to get about 24 people out of the building.
Two individuals suffered burn injuries and were taken by helicopter to a burn center for treatment.
Officials said later Friday that one juvenile died as a result of the fire.
The age of the child was not yet clear.
Additionally, a firefighter, police officer and civilian all suffered minor injuries. All have since been treated and released.
"This is a devastating loss for a family and for our community," said Mayor Helmin J. Caba. "On behalf of the City of Perth Amboy, I extend my deepest condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy. I want to thank our police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and mutual aid partners who responded to the scene and worked tirelessly under difficult circumstances. As we continue to learn more, I ask our community to keep the family in their thoughts and respect their privacy during this painful time."
The cause and circumstances of the fire are under investigation.
