The fire broke out on the New Jersey Transit bus on the northbound eastern spur of the turnpike in Secaucus, before the approach to exit 15X, at around 6:12 a.m.
The bus operating on the 113 line, which departed Plainfield at 5:06 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York at 6:13 a.m., experienced a tire blowout, resulting in a fire.
The bus packed with 49 passengers and an operator, but was safely evacuated.
The customers were accommodated by a following bus.
PATH and NJ TRANSIT rail are cross-honoring tickets due to the resulting traffic delays on the Turnpike.
Traffic was spotted squeezing by as the bus was fully engulfed in flames before authorities could shut traffic down on that side of the road.
The northbound eastern spur was eventually closed for fire department activity. On the southbound side, one lane was closed.
The fire was put out a short time later, but firefighters remained on the scene as the bus smoldered.
No one was injured.
New Jersey State Police are investigating the incident.
