PATERSON, New Jersey (WABC) -- A group of concerned community members in New Jersey helped give a young dog a second chance at life.

A doodle mix, now named Kilo, was rescued after he was spotted hiding near Paterson Great Falls.

Community members stopped to help, but Kilo ran from anyone who approached. Police were notified as they worked to keep Kilo in sight.

Paterson Animal Control was able to secure him and transport him to Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge (RBARI) for medical care, where he was found matted, underweight, unneutered and fearful.

RBARI learned that Kilo's owner had been attempting to surrender or rehome him.

"We're incredibly grateful to everyone who refused to give up on Kilo," said Megan Brinster, executive director of RBARI. "Every person who stopped, every call that was made, and the dedication of our community all played a role in giving this little dog a second chance."

Since arriving at RBARI, Kilo has received veterinary care, grooming, meals. His personality is shining through, as the staff said he is playful with other dogs, gentle and sweet-natured.

RBARI is seeking donations to help cover Kilo's medical care. Donations can be made here.
