Driver hits NYPD cruiser, causing it to overturn and burst into flames on Bruckner Expressway

MOTT HAVEN, Bronx (WABC) -- Two NYPD officers escaped with minor injuries after their police cruiser overturned and burst into flames on the Bruckner Expressway in the Bronx early Friday morning.

Police say the cruiser was rear-ended by a BMW near East 144th Street in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx just after 1 a.m.

The impact caused the police cruiser to overturn and catch fire.

The two officers inside were able to escape the burning vehicle. They were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries and are listed in stable condition.

The driver of the BMW remained at the scene.
