Fire breaks out after mishap during removal of tractor-trailer from Clifton building

CLIFTON, New Jersey (WABC) -- The effort to remove a tractor-trailer still lodged inside a building in Clifton took a dangerous turn Tuesday when a fire erupted due to a mishap.

When crews went to remove the truck from the building, the chain snapped, the truck dropped and flames broke out.

Firefighters reacted quickly to put the fire out, but parts of the house came tumbling down and much of the building is now reduced to rubble.

The big rig careened into Limo Ride, a business along Kensington Avenue and Route 3, right before 2:30 a.m. Monday.

Surveillance video captured the dramatic moment, showing the truck never slowing down or veering before slamming into the house in a neighborhood adjacent to Route 3 eastbound.

Firefighters rescued the driver, placing him on a stretcher before rushing him to the hospital. A man who was inside the home at the time was also rescued, pulled from a second story window. Remarkably, he was not injured.

Officials spent the last day and a half figuring out how to safely support the building so the truck could be towed.

A witness said when they started to remove the truck, a firetruck had just left the scene and had to rush back over.

The truck is still stuck and traffic around the entire area was a mess on Tuesday afternoon, especially on Route 3.

The truck was hauling dog food and pet supplies and is now even heavier and water-logged from being doused by water.

Investigators are still working to determine the original cause of the crash.
