EAST NEW YORK (WABC) -- The family of a 7-year-old girl who survived a vicious stabbing attack in Brooklyn is speaking out.

Mikayla Capers spent a week and a half in the hospital after she was stabbed 16 times in the elevator of her East New York apartment.

Capers was on the way to get ice cream with a friend.

On Saturday, Capers' great-grandmother asked that everyone give her time so that she can get all the help that she needs.

The parents of Capers' playmate, 6-year-old P.J. Avitto say they will hold a block party on Tuesday to mark the boy's 7th birthday.

Ex-con Daniel St. Hubert is charged in the attack.
