Fans have to park somewhere if they drive to the Ryder Cup, and with nearby residential areas completely closed to non-residents, long-time homeowners in Farmingdale got to thinking of ways to make use of the opportunity.
"They're all doing it. She's doing it. The whole block is doing it," said Farmingdale homeowner Ken Amato.
Residents are advertising on sites like Facebook and renting out parking spaces in their driveways. Amato can fit four each day if he gets them.
"Especially if the weather gets nice, this place is going to be crazy," Amato said.
Farmingdale resident Cynthia Hare said the going rate is about $100 per car, per night.
Some of the offers were a hard pass for homeowners. Amato had one guy who has a 19-foot camper and just wanted to park in Amato's driveway and sleep in it.
Amato said "no."
But certain attendees at Bethpage Park reportedly paid other homeowners upwards of $25,000 for the week to rent a whole house nearby.
"It's crazy, $25,000 for a week," said Al LaQuinta of Wantagh. "You know, you could pay your mortgage for half the year."
Or you could go a different direction for the full Long Island experience.
Daghan Hart has a super cute houseboat in Seaford, which has two bedrooms, but not even terribly close to the tournament. It's 25 minutes away.
"I didn't expect all the way out here that so many people would be messaging," Hart said. "I normally rent it for anywhere from $550 to $600 a night."
Hart said he's now getting $1,200 a night.
Some Long Islanders know the pain of traffic, and so for them, this is worth it.
So, for now, local residents, properly stickered, are parking on the street to make room in their driveways, but also room for opportunity.
