Water main break submerges cars, leaves streets flooded in the Bronx

Updated 1 hour ago
BEDFORD PARK, The Bronx (WABC) -- The FDNY responded to a large water main in the Bronx.

It happened Monday just after 7:30 p.m. on Webster Ave. Between E. 201st Street and E. Moshulu Pkway S in Bedford Park.

Emergency crews tried to open some drains, but the water was gushing in faster than the area could absorb it.

Cars and streets are underwater -- however, there are no reports of water going inside any apartments in the area.

One man told Eyewitness News his daughter was able to move her car to higher ground before it was too late. The two live on opposite sides of Webster and now cannot walk easily to each other's apartments.

"She had a neighbor move her car up the corner. They were lucky right there by the barbershop, and they were lucky to move. What I am concerned about right now is like, what are we going to do about fresh water?" said Joseph Parrom.

Parrom says no one has been around to offer fresh water for residents or another place to go for the night.

Webster Avenue is closed from East 204th Street to Bedford Park Boulevard.

There are no reported injuries.

Crews are working to determine the cause of the break.
