How FDNY is using robots in firefighting

NEW YORK (WABC) -- As technology evolves, seemingly at warp speed, the FDNY is harnessing the power of robotics. The department's robotics team is among the best in the world, dedicated to protecting New Yorkers and drastically improving job safety for the city's firefighters.

From drones to robotic dogs, New York City's fire department is equipped with the latest high-tech devices with remarkable autonomous capabilities.

The FDNY's two robotic dogs were introduced in 2022. They're designed to respond to very specific hazardous situations, including a potential terror attack on the subway. The robots have only been deployed to one emergency so far, a deadly garage collapse in the financial district in 2023, but as FDNY Captain Mike Leo explains, their abilities can be life-saving in the worst disasters.
