Medical students on Long Island train in mass casualty incident simulations

Friday, September 19, 2025
LONG ISLAND (WABC) -- EMT medical students from the Zucker School of Medicine participated in mass casualty incident simulations at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy.

The training was for worst-case scenarios like mass shootings, hazmat spills or a train derailment.

It's training these prospective doctors hope they'll never have to use but is critical to saving lives.

Through simulations like these, 100 medical students from Hofstra and Northwell's Zucker School of Medicine, all working on their EMT training, got to put the training to the test.

"It forces home the fact that they are going to be active learners, participating on teams as they learn the science and learning how to apply that science to patients," Dr. David Battinelli with the Zucker School of Medicine said.

It involved 5 specific incidents, including an active shooter, a bus bomb, a hazmat situation, a car extrication and a train derailment.

"Understanding that things aren't going to go the way you planned. There's a lot of patients that were not cooperative," John Brady, a medical student, said.

It's something they might not see until their residency.

For Keyleen Argueta, who'd like to become a cardiologist one day, it's also about mutual respect.

"I have so much respect for EMTs, police officers, and firefighters. This is a simulation, but they have to really get to know and be familiar with," Keyleen Argueta, a medical student, said.

Zucker is among the first in the country to train its medical students this way.

This is the culmination of 8 weeks of training, but they'll take their EMT tests this weekend.
