During the search for the bodies of women who were killed by Rex Heuerman, they also discovered the body of an Asian man in 2011.
Authorities still don't know who he is or who killed him.
Investigators describe him as 'Asian Doe.'
Less than one week after serial killer Heuerman's sentencing, there's a renewed call to solve the murder of the remaining body found on Gilgo Beach.
"We're going to utilize all the efforts for 'Asian Doe' that we've utilized for all the other cases," Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said.
Tierney says the man's skeletal remains were found on Gilgo Beach along Ocean Parkway in 2011.
Last year, the Gilgo Beach Task Force was hoping for a big break and released a flyer with a forensic sketch of the victim to help identify him.
With no luck, they're turning to the NYPD and what's called 'Investigative Genetic Genealogy.'
"The way it works is we have an investigative genetic genealogist, and they look through, publicly available databases to try to look at, publicly available genetic profiles of individuals, to see if they could find a relation to the victim, a, a relative to the victim," Tierney said.
The NYPD will go into Asian communities in New York City to ask for voluntary swabs to add to its database.
Tierney said identifying the victim would be a huge break because it can lead investigators to a suspect and an arrest.
"You could look to, that person and their last, moments, before they disappeared, to try to gain insight on the investigation and, further evidence that you could, you could look at," Tierney said.
