Now, we're learning new details about the woman as she continues to recover and also plans legal action.
Latoya James continues what her attorney describes as her painful return to normalcy after being accidentally shot during a hail of gunfire that killed 32-year-old Zale Thompson.
This vicious attack, caught on a security camera, occurred when Thompson suddenly pulled out a hatchet and attacked a group of officers of a Jamaica street last month. One officer suffered a serious head wound.
Other officers opened fire, reportedly shooting 19 times and killing Thompson.
James' attorney, Andrew Siben, says his client was homeless and was walking to a bus stop when she suddenly felt the pain of being hit by a bullet.
James is still receiving treatment in rehabilitation, but that, Siben said, may end soon.
He announced that James plans to file a notice of claim against the NYPD and the city.
The notice of claim, a prelude to the lawsuit, says that police officers were negligent, careless and reckless. Siben said he expects to file suit early next year.
