NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- A vacant house collapsed in Newark overnight, leaving an exterior wall leaning on a neighbor's home.

The unoccupied house on West Runyon Street collapsed around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, appearing to fall down in all directions.

The walls and roof caved in, and wood was strewn across the property.

One exterior wall leaned precariously on the adjacent house.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

One neighbor told Eyewitness News that he was sleeping when the building caved in.

He also expressed that the house had been abandoned for years and he was unsurprised by its collapse.

A demolition crew successfully removed the large portion of the home that had fallen onto the unoccupied building next door.

The owner of the home said he was having issues getting building permits and a lot of materials were needed to rehabilitate the structure.

Eyewitness News reached out to the mayor's office to see if there were problems with the permit process and are waiting to hear back.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
