The truck was traveling on Maple Avenue near Keer Avenue around 4 a.m. when it hit the downed tree.
The driver said he didn't see the tree in the dark and the crash left him trapped inside.
The large tree apparently came toppling down sometime in the overnight hours.
Neighbors said they called 911 about the fallen tree because they wanted to prevent something like this from happening, but the street wasn't closed.
"Newark wasn't here. Hillside was here but they wasn't doing anything about it. I guess because of jurisdiction so they stood there for however, long but they left for whatever reason," one resident said.
Initially, emergency crews thought the tree fell onto the vehicle.
Neighbors shared a video that showed two men climbing onto the truck to help the driver.
According to the bakery manager, the diver escaped without a scratch.
Many residents are wondering why the street was left open and why the tree wasn't removed long before.
"The tree is old, it's rotted, and they keep overlooking the tree. They sent people to cut it instead of getting rid of it," a resident said.
No one was injured.
Newark Neighborhood Services will remove the tree.
