MONTAUK, New York (WABC) -- A humpback whale washed up on the beach in Montauk on Long Island early Friday morning.

The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society said the whale was originally seen floating several miles offshore by a fisherman late Thursday night, who notified authorities upon the discovery.

The 40-foot adult whale washed up in the Ditch Plains section around 6:30 a.m.

AMCS is working with local authorities to determine how much access they can get to the whale, which is severely decomposed.
