Hundreds of toys for children in need stolen from warehouse on Long Island

HUNTINGTON, Long Island (WABC) -- Police are searching for the thieves who stole hundreds of toys meant to be holiday gifts for children in need in Suffolk County.

The toys that weren't stolen were damaged.

The organization "Toys For Tots" is asking for help so it can continue to carry out its important mission.

Pallets of toys worth $50,000, which were being donated, were ransacked over the weekend in Huntington.

Toys of Hope is a nonprofit organization that collects donations for homeless and needy children in New York and Long Island.

The 600 toys were waiting to be picked up on Sunday when they realized what had happened.

"It looked like everything was ransacked, vandalized, destroyed. I immediately could see that hundreds of toys were gone," Founder of Toys For Hope, Melissa Doktofsky said.

The toys were based on personalized wish lists created by each child with their case worker.

"We don't just give random toys. We make it a very personalized experience. And these items were really specific items they thought they were getting, that they were getting from Santa and they believe in the magic of the holiday," Doktofsky said.

While the thieves stole hope, they couldn't rob Long Island of its Christmas spirit.

Throughout the day, a steady stream of donors tried to help replace what was taken.

The nonprofit says they just want the toys returned before Christmas and will forgive the suspect with no questions asked.
