The dramatic scene played out on Grove Street near Springfield Avenue in Irvington.
At approximately 10:30 a.m., officers attempted to stop a minivan at South 20th Street and 18th Avenue in Newark after recognizing the vehicle from an alert that went out about a stolen vehicle.
The minivan was reported stolen in an armed carjacking in the early morning hours on Sunday.
The officers pulled the vehicle over, and as one trooper approached on the sidewalk, police say the driver -- identified as 31-year-old Steve Montgomery -- drove the minivan onto the sidewalk and at the trooper.
The trooper then opened fire at Montgomery, firing several shots and striking him at least once.
Montgomery continued driving until he crashed into another vehicle at Grove and Nye in Irvington, where he was taken into custody and arrested.
Montgomery was taken University Hospital with non-life-threatening wounds. He is under guard, and charges have not been field yet.
Newark police are investigating the carjacking, and Montgomery may be connected to other robberies committed in Newark Monday. Law enforcement sources he was wearing a ski mask when he was apprehended and that he was on a crime spree that included an armed robbery of a gas station, the robbery of the vehicle he was driving and at least one other crime. The sources say a gun was found in the minivan.
No police officers were hurt.
The entire area around the shooting scene was sealed off by police.
The investigation is ongoing.
