EAST VILLAGE, Manhattan (WABC) -- Local officials unveiled a sign proclaiming East Sixth Street between Avenues C and D as "Jimmy Carter Way," in Manhattan's East Village on Monday

In 1984, Carter and his wife Rosalynn conducted their first week-long project with Habitat for Humanity at the Mascot Flats Apartment building on East Sixth Street.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter worked with residents and volunteers to rehabilitate the building.

The Carters went on to inspire volunteers to build, renovate or repair more than 4,400 homes in 14 countries.

Carter died last December at the age of 100.
