KEANSBURG, New Jersey (WABC) -- First responders helped rescue three children from a house fire in Keansburg on Friday morning.

It happened just after 10 a.m. at a home on Seeley Avenue.

As officers arrived they saw smoke coming out of the windows and three children trying to exit the home.

Witnesses say two police officers arrived early and coaxed the three children to jump out of the second-floor window.

"I actually was standing there watching my officers catch three young juveniles and they did a great job, I'm thankful that the juveniles are OK," said Dep. Chief Bryan King with the Keansburg Police Department. "It was a very tough situation to get into the apartment with all the smoke, there was a heavy smoke condition. Officers and firemen were having a very hard time getting in. The fire department eventually got in and started extinguishing the fire."

When firefighters arrived, they had to go into the burning building and find a woman who was in a back room and pull her out to safety. She was taken to the hospital in unknown condition.

One officer suffered an arm injury from catching the children.

"Cops are usually the first ones on the scene and it's hard for them to be waiting on a fire truck so they act," said Keansburg fire official Arthur Boden.

There was no word on what sparked the fire but firefighters do not believe it was suspicious.

It marked the second time in a week that officers in Monmouth County saved children from a fire after police in Asbury Park rescued a child on Monday.
