LIRR service restored after car struck by train near Pinelawn station

LONG ISLAND, New York (WABC) -- LIRR service was restored for the morning commute Friday after a train struck a car near the Pinelawn Station in East Farmingdale Thursday night, killing one person.

It happened just before 8:30 p.m.

Service operated on the Ronkonkoma Branch Friday morning, but only on one of two tracks as the railroad repairs track damage.

Full restoration of the Ronkonkoma line is expected by 11 a.m.

The crash caused extensive damage to the train's infrastructure and the third rail.



The train was going 75 to 80 mph at the time of the collision, the speed limit at the location is 80 mph.
