LIRR train strikes vehicle; service on Ronkonkoma Branch restored

CENTRAL ISLIP, Long Island (WABC) -- Service on the Long Island Rail Road's Ronkonkoma Branch has been restored after a train struck a vehicle near Central Islip.

Earlier, service was suspended, after LIRR officials say just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday, the 4:12 train from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma struck a vehicle on the tracks at the Carlton Avenue crossing.
The 500 people who were on the train were evacuated, and placed on buses at the Central Islip train station.

No injuries have been reported.

It is not known why the car was on the tracks at the time.
